A phone using the Symbian operating system is capable of integrating several software applications at once, such as word processing, Internet browser and email. The first phone on Symbian OS is the Nokia 9210. It was launched in 2000 and has been quite ordinary-looking combined with the old-style black-green on the screen and keyboard… simple at first glance.
'Opening revealed a full QWERTY keyboard and color screen, almost like a mini laptop. It could be used to send e-mails, surf the Internet and it was a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and file viewer / content manager. All this from a fairly basic looking handset.
Since 9210 the Symbian operating system has appeared on a number of new handsets, with more and more software being developed to make use of them. A regular feature on the Symbian OS is the ability to send and receive e-mails and access to instant messaging, full access to the Internet and even hook combined with your TV.
Nokia seems to have cornered the market in the United Kingdom when it comes to Symbian phones, with cameras in all shapes and sizes, clamshells sliders for PDAs. There is even a device that looks like a small camcorder, the Nokia N93i is able to capture DVD-quality video, as well as mobile television software to turn it into a portable TV.
But Nokia is not the only company to jump on Symbian movement. Ericsson, LG, Samsung and Motorola have all aircraft carrying this technology too. The Motorola Z8 also yet another new feature, a "kick-slider." That means that when the phone slides on the screen, it forms a curve that corresponds to the shape of your letter that would face a standard GSM.
